Featured at the MCA Brick Gallery's Dreamscapes Surrealism Exhibit, “Kevin Hears the Mother Ship” is a metaphor for humanity’s age-old quest to prove the existence of God. Using feline figures as stand-ins for humans, surrealist artist Ellen Hosafros explores her personal spiritual journey ranging from membership in traditional religion as a child to her current embrace of agnostic theism. In the painting, “Kevin” has the sudden realization that God is real but is conflicted as to what to do next…seek out the supreme being on his own? Go the route of religion? The painting illustrates humanity’s view of the existence of God over millennia. The orange figures on the right reflect traditional systems of faith and worship practiced worldwide in churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, etc. The figure carrying the lantern denotes sacred leaders who light the way. The larger blue figure on the bottom right represents the atheist who rejects the existence of God. The figure perched at the bottom of the stairs, as well as the small one in the distance who watches the sacred leader, are agnostics who acknowledge a divine creator but choose to embark on individual journeys to enlightenment. The orange figure on the pedestal on the lower left is the individual who spends a lifetime perfecting personal enlightenment via service of humanity, and therefore finds enlightenment. Which path will Kevin take?
